A couple of years ago a staff member in Region 2 created an Excel-based spreadsheet that contained all high school data for students in New Century High Schools (Gated funded small high schools), it has been upgraded and is being used by Support Organizations - it allow users to filter an endless array of student demographic and achievement data ... the cost: nothing.
In the spring of 07 I sat through the ARIS training module ... many "bells and whistle," but do I really need to know how to calculate standard deviations? participate in DOE monitored blogs? or bulletin boards? With a few mouse clicks it tells me that Johnny can't read and/or numerate, as a teacher I already know this ... it tells me who is a "chronic absentee," I already have figured this out ... how do I mitigate the child's problems? how do I get him to school every day? how do I improve his diet? can i find him better housing? find a job for his parent? I can tell you quite precisingly which classes are "doing better," whateverr that means (tenure decisions, merit pay) ... $80 million, mind boggling ... can we see the spredsheet that shows us how the 80 mill was spent?
