I don't understand the comments of "S" above -- most charter schools and especially those in NYC have smaller classes than traditional public schools, and this is one of their prime attractions for parents -- and one of their keys to success.

Great piece here! It's interesting how charters around the country (and especially in NYC) are proving what factors make a school successful: good teachers, well-treated teachers, good leadership, strong school-wide culture, procedural structure and consistency. While not overtly, through actions, these "turbo-charters" are making a political statement about what makes ALL schools successful-- not just charters.

Taking the conversation away from class size, monetary resources and teacher unions (all of which do help in success), they are showing schools in urban settings with limited resources (but emphasis on good teaching, leadership and culture) can and will show high achievement. It's an empowering statement-- because if we get outside of the whole public vs. charter debate, we can see public schools if following the model can be successful too (and many are).

Also--- keep an eye on Mott Haven Academy Charter as a "total school"... they've got a whole social services staff on hand. Will be interesting to see how it works out.

I find it interesting that "no excuses" only applies to schools while not to the government and the business communiy. Sure, want to escape paying corporate taxes while buying the government, no problem. Creating urban school systems run by dictators who shut out all parent and teacher input while parents in suburbs get to choose school boards and make basic decisions on budgets? Excuses galore.

I was thinking of the "Total Woman," who welcomed her husband at the door dressed in nothing but strategically placed whipped cream. That probably says something about me -- or at least my age.
